Categorized Dogs

Because a so-called "difficult" or "categorized" dog deserves as much love and kindness as any other, I help you comply with the law while strengthening your bond.

Understanding the legal obligations (Categories 1 & 2)

Owner of a Rottweiler, American Staffordshire Terrier, or other molosser? Here is the list of mandatory steps to be in full compliance with French law.

Detention permit

Issued by your local town hall upon presentation of the owner's aptitude certificate, the dog's behavioral assessment, and other supporting documents.

Aptitude certificate

A one-day (7-hour) theoretical and practical training course covering dog training, safety, and accident prevention, led by an approved trainer.

Behavioral assessment

Carried out by an approved veterinarian when the dog is between 8 and 12 months old. It rates the dog on a danger scale from 1 (low risk) to 4 (high risk).

Vaccination & Insurance

The rabies vaccine must be valid (European passport mandatory) and you must take out civil liability insurance specifically mentioning your categorized dog.

Leash & Muzzle

Mandatory on public roads and in public places / public transport for category 2 dogs. For category 1 dogs, access to closed public places and transport is prohibited.

Neutering / Spaying (Category 1)

Surgical and permanent sterilization is mandatory for category 1 dogs (dogs of appearance, not registered in the French Stud Book / LOF), supported by a veterinary certificate.

My daily work with a Rottweiler I look after regularly

Working with so-called "sensitive" or categorized dogs is an integral part of my daily life. I regularly look after a superb 4-year-old male Rottweiler belonging to a close friend (a Rottweiler I look after regularly). This regular field experience allows me to perfectly understand the specific behavioral needs of these breeds, but also the challenges and judgment their owners may face on a daily basis.

Training a molosser does not require physical strength, dominance, or punitive collars. Quite the opposite! At Man'A Pattes, we focus on the precise reading of calming signals, positive reinforcement / force-free methods for good behaviors, calm management of emotions, and effective desensitization techniques.

An approach focused on mutual trust

The mandatory wearing of a muzzle or the looks of passersby should not ruin the bond with your dog. My program is designed to offer them the best life balance.

Positive muzzle desensitization

A muzzle should not be a punishment for your dog. Thanks to a progressive desensitization protocol, we teach your companion to slide their snout into it with pleasure, associating it with play and highly appetizing treats.

Eventually, the muzzle becomes a simple daily accessory, just like the harness or leash, allowing for peaceful walks in compliance with the law.

Our areas of focus:

  • 🐾 Connecting to the owner despite distractions
  • 🐾 Loose leash walking (essential for large dogs)
  • 🐾 Controlled socialization and calm encounters
  • 🐾 Managing excitement and channeling energy
